Caterpillar, Inc.

I sincerely love exploring our country’s industrial heritage. It is industrial innovation and our “can-do” spirit that built the United States. As I drive around, of course I see old, abandoned factories and warehouses, the remnants of what once was, and it saddens me. Although some industries faded away through time or were offshored some time ago, there are still pillars of our heritage that continue to operate successfully. These businesses represent the cornerstone of what we’re all about. Caterpillar Inc. is one such manufacturing. It is an American company and the world's largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment.

The Caterpillar Museum

My wide Kelly and I spent a wonderful morning in Peoria, Illinois and visited the Caterpillar Museum and let me say it was AMAZING! Every turn offered another wow moment. I applaud the Caterpillar employees, from top to bottom, for the good work they do. From my perspective, they have it all together. From business success, customer focus, engineering and manufacturing, they know what they’re doing, and they do it well!

The Caterpillar Visitors Center and Museum offers an engaging and immersive look into the history and innovation behind one of the world’s most recognized equipment manufacturers. Visitors begin their experience with a thrilling virtual ride in the bed of a Cat 797F mining truck, simulating a journey down a massive haul road. The Heritage Gallery highlights Caterpillar’s evolution, tracing its roots from early Holt and Best tractors to today’s advanced machinery. This exhibit features historical artifacts, restored machines, and personal items donated by employees and enthusiasts. In the Immersive Visualization Center, guests can design their own Cat machines using the same 3D technology employed by engineers and even explore a virtual factory line.

The “Caterpillar People at Work” exhibit focuses on the company’s global workforce, showcasing how employees, dealers, and customers collaborate to build essential infrastructure worldwide. Interactive simulators allow visitors to test their skills operating heavy equipment, while displays of rare and antique tractors, including a 1930s D8 and early Holt-era models, connect Caterpillar’s innovative present to its pioneering past. Together, these exhibits provide a dynamic and educational experience that captures the spirit of engineering, progress, and hard work that defines Caterpillar.

The Caterpillar 797F

The Caterpillar 797F on display is an ultra-class mining truck engineered for the world’s most demanding hauling operations. Let me say, it is MASSIVE! It is so large that it can’t be shipped to a customer in one piece, it is shipped in component pieces and assembled onsite with the use of cranes and other equipment.

With a massive payload capacity of approximately 400 U.S. tons (363 metric tons), it stands as one of the largest and most productive haul trucks ever built. Powered by a Cat C175-20 engine delivering up to 4,000 horsepower, the 797F combines raw strength with advanced engineering for exceptional performance and reliability in large-scale mining environments. Despite its enormous size, an operating weight exceeding 1.3 million pound, the truck can reach speeds of up to 42 miles per hour while fully loaded.

Its design incorporates robust oil-cooled, multiple-disc brakes on all four corners to ensure safe operation on rough haul roads, and a seven-speed transmission for smooth power delivery and optimal fuel efficiency. The 797F’s large fuel and fluid capacities enable extended operation in remote locations, minimizing downtime. Built with durability, safety, and productivity in mind, the Caterpillar 797F exemplifies engineering excellence—helping mines around the world move more material, more efficiently, and with lower cost per ton.

How Cat Changed the World

Caterpillar equipment has played a transformative role in shaping the modern world, powering progress in industries ranging from construction and mining to energy and agriculture. Since its founding in the early 20th century, Caterpillar has become synonymous with durability, innovation, and global impact. Its iconic yellow machines have built roads, bridges, and cities, enabling economic growth and improved infrastructure in nearly every country. From the construction of the Hoover Dam and the rebuilding of Europe after World War II to the development of renewable energy projects today, Caterpillar equipment has consistently been at the heart of human advancement.

Beyond physical construction, Caterpillar’s influence extends to sustainability and technology. Modern Cat machinery integrates smart systems that enhance fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and utilize data analytics for predictive maintenance, minimizing downtime and environmental impact. This shift toward cleaner and more efficient operations supports global efforts to combat climate change while maintaining productivity. In developing regions, Caterpillar’s machinery has enabled communities to access resources, build schools, and expand agricultural operations, fostering self-sufficiency and economic opportunity.

The company’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation ensures that Caterpillar equipment not only meets today’s industrial challenges but also drives future progress. Whether digging mines, paving highways, or powering remote areas, Caterpillar machinery symbolizes human ingenuity and perseverance—helping to build, power, and shape a better world for generations to come.

The History of Cat

The history of the Caterpillar Equipment Company dates back to the early 1900s, when two pioneering tractor manufacturers—Benjamin Holt and C.L. Best—merged their companies in 1925 to form Caterpillar Tractor Co. Holt had invented the first successful track-type tractor, nicknamed the “Caterpillar,” for its ability to move smoothly over soft ground, revolutionizing farming and construction. The merger combined Holt’s innovative engineering with Best’s business acumen, laying the foundation for a global industrial leader.

Caterpillar quickly gained recognition for building durable, reliable machinery used in massive projects such as the Hoover Dam and World War II infrastructure efforts. Over the decades, the company expanded worldwide, producing heavy equipment for construction, mining, energy, and transportation. Now headquartered in Irving, Texas, Caterpillar continues to innovate through advanced technologies, sustainability initiatives, and data-driven equipment solutions, maintaining its reputation as a cornerstone of global progress and industrial strength.

The Future of Cat

Caterpillar’s future vision focuses on innovation, sustainability, and digital transformation to power a cleaner, smarter world. The company is advancing toward reduced emission and electric equipment, integrating renewable energy solutions and autonomous technologies across its product lines. Through data analytics, automation, and connected systems, Caterpillar aims to enhance efficiency, safety, and productivity for customers in every industry. Its long-term strategy emphasizes circular economy principles—rebuilding and reusing components to minimize waste—while continuing to support global infrastructure growth. Caterpillar’s commitment to progress ensures it remains a leader in building the sustainable, technology-driven job sites of tomorrow.
